The Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed for people who may need to act as an emergency first aider in the workplace. It gives learners the practical skills and confidence to respond to common workplace emergencies until professional medical help arrives.
The course is suitable for a wide range of workplaces, including offices, shops, warehouses, hospitality venues, construction environments, education settings and small businesses. It is especially useful where an employer's first-aid needs assessment identifies Emergency First Aid at Work as the appropriate level of training.
Training is practical and easy to follow. Learners take part in demonstrations, hands-on practice and realistic scenarios so they can understand not only what to do, but how to respond calmly and safely in a real emergency.

- Employees selected to become workplace emergency first aiders
- Office and retail staff
- Warehouse and logistics workers
- Construction and site personnel
- Hospitality and catering staff
- Security staff
- Supervisors and team leaders
- Small business owners
- People who want a recognised workplace first-aid qualification
Employers should decide the level and number of trained first aiders they need after completing a first-aid needs assessment. That assessment should consider the hazards in the workplace, number and distribution of employees, work patterns, previous incidents and access to emergency services.
What Will I Learn?
The course focuses on the immediate actions a first aider may need to take during a workplace emergency. Topics typically include:
- The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
- Assessing an incident and keeping yourself, the casualty and others safe
- Primary survey and casualty assessment
- Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
- The recovery position
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Recognising and responding to choking
- Controlling wounds and bleeding
- Recognising and treating shock
- Dealing with seizures
- Minor injuries such as small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns, scalds and splinters
- Preventing cross-infection
- Using available first-aid equipment
- Recording incidents and actions taken
Practical, Hands-On Training
First aid is a practical skill, so learners are expected to take part throughout the day. Your trainer will demonstrate each technique and then give you time to practise it yourself.
CPR and AED
You will practise CPR using training manikins and learn how an AED can be used safely as part of the emergency response to cardiac arrest.
Choking
You will learn how to recognise a choking emergency and the steps to take when a casualty has a blocked airway.
Unresponsive Casualty
You will learn how to check responsiveness and breathing, when to place a casualty in the recovery position and when CPR is required.
Bleeding and Shock
You will practise how to respond to wounds and bleeding and how to recognise signs that a casualty may be developing shock.
How Is the Course Assessed?
Assessment normally takes place throughout the course. Learners need to demonstrate that they can carry out key first-aid procedures safely and show sufficient understanding of the topics covered.
- Practical demonstrations
- Trainer observation
- Scenario-based activities
- Questions and answers
- A knowledge or multiple-choice assessment where required by the qualification
Your trainer will explain the assessment process clearly before you begin. The aim is to make sure you can apply the skills correctly in a realistic situation.
Certificate
Learners who successfully complete the training and assessment receive an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate. Workplace first-aid certificates are normally valid for 3 years.
Entry Requirements
There are normally no formal academic entry requirements. Because this is a practical course, learners must be able to take part in the practical assessment and follow the trainer's instructions.
- Learners should be physically able to demonstrate the required first-aid skills
- A reasonable level of spoken and written English is helpful
Why Take Emergency First Aid at Work?
A workplace emergency can happen without warning. Someone may collapse, choke, suffer a serious cut or become unresponsive. Knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a major difference.
This course gives learners a structured way to assess an incident, call for help and provide immediate first aid while waiting for the emergency services where necessary.
Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work - Which Do I Need?
The right course depends on the workplace, not simply on personal preference. Employers should complete a first-aid needs assessment before deciding which level of training is required.
Choose EFAW when
The workplace needs emergency first-aid cover and the needs assessment identifies the EFAW level as appropriate.
Choose FAW when
The workplace requires broader first-aid competence because of factors such as higher hazards, larger workforce, work activities or other needs identified by the employer.
See First Aid at Work →Important: Some workplaces may also need additional specialist training for specific hazards or work activities.
