Ofqual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction)

Designed for construction supervisors seeking a recognised industry qualification.

Build recognised evidence of your supervisory skills and competence on site

The NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision course, officially titled the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction), is designed for people who already have experience working in construction and are taking on, or already carrying out, supervisory responsibilities.

NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision Course Overview

  • This Level 3 NVQ construction supervision course focuses on the practical side of supervising construction work.
  • You are not expected to simply memorise information for an exam. Instead, you build a portfolio of evidence showing that you can carry out your responsibilities to the required standard in a real working environment.
  • The current CITB recommended structure contains six mandatory units and two optional units. The mandatory areas include confirming work activities and resources, maintaining working relationships, confirming methods of work, maintaining health, safety, environmental and welfare practices, organising work operations and monitoring progress against schedules.

Who Is the NVQ Level 3 Site Supervisor Course For?

  • Construction supervisors
  • Working supervisors
  • Trade supervisors
  • Foremen
  • Experienced tradespeople moving into supervision
  • Team leaders with construction responsibilities
  • Experienced construction workers supervising teams
  • Operatives who have developed supervisory responsibilities
  • Construction workers looking to formally recognise their existing skills

Why Choose Level 3 NVQ Construction Supervision?

Moving from being a skilled worker to supervising others is a significant step. You are no longer responsible only for the quality of your own work. You may also need to organise people, check resources, coordinate activities, deal with changing site conditions, communicate with other teams and make sure work is carried out safely and according to the required standards.

This NVQ gives you the opportunity to have those skills formally assessed.

  • Gain a recognised Level 3 construction qualification
  • Demonstrate your existing supervisory competence
  • Develop a stronger understanding of supervisory responsibilities
  • Build evidence from your normal workplace activities
  • Strengthen your professional profile
  • Support progression into further supervisory or management training
  • Work towards the appropriate CSCS supervisory card where the qualification and other requirements are accepted

How Does the NVQ Work?

  1. Initial discussion: we discuss your current role, experience and responsibilities to make sure the qualification is suitable for you.

  2. Registration: once your suitability and entry requirements have been confirmed, you can be registered with the relevant awarding organisation.

  3. Assessment planning: your assessor explains the units and evidence requirements and helps plan how you can demonstrate competence.

  4. Build your evidence: you collect evidence from your actual work.

  5. Assessor review: your assessor reviews evidence against the qualification requirements and identifies any gaps.

  6. Qualification achievement: once all required units and assessment requirements are completed, achievement is confirmed by the awarding organisation.

Examples of Evidence

  • Workplace observations
  • Professional discussions
  • Work records
  • Site documentation
  • Photographs
  • Witness testimonies
  • Completed work
  • Relevant reports and records
  • Evidence of planning and coordination

The exact evidence required depends on your qualification, occupational area and assessment plan.

Is There an Exam?

No traditional written exam is normally required for the NVQ itself. The qualification is competency based and focuses on demonstrating what you can actually do in the workplace. Your assessor will assess your performance and supporting knowledge against the requirements of the qualification.

How Long Does It Take?

There is no single fixed completion time for every learner. An NVQ is based on your existing competence and the evidence you can produce from your workplace. Completion time can depend on your experience, job role, access to suitable activities, availability and how quickly you respond to assessor feedback.

Qualification framework measures such as Total Qualification Time and Guided Learning Hours should not be presented as a guaranteed completion period or as hours you must spend in a classroom.

Do I Need to Be Working in Construction?

Yes, normally. Because this is a competence based, work related qualification, you need access to a suitable workplace where you can demonstrate the required supervisory activities.

If you are unsure whether your current role provides enough suitable evidence, speak to our team before registering.

Entry Requirements

The qualification is intended for people with relevant construction experience. Entry requirements can vary slightly depending on the awarding organisation and current qualification specification. We will discuss your experience with you before registration so you know what is required.

Can This Qualification Help With a Gold CSCS Card?

The qualification can form part of the route towards the CSCS Supervisory card, subject to meeting the current CSCS requirements.

CSCS currently lists the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction) under its Occupational Work Supervisor supervisory route. Applicants must also meet the relevant CSCS requirements, including the appropriate CITB Specialist Supervisory Health, Safety and Environment test, to apply for the Gold CSCS card.

Achievement of the NVQ does not automatically issue a CSCS card. The card application is made separately and applicants must meet the current CSCS requirements.

NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision Compared With Classroom Courses

Why Choose High Aims Training?

At High Aims Training, we understand that experienced construction workers do not necessarily need to sit in a classroom learning things they already deal with every day. Our approach is focused on helping you understand the qualification requirements, identify the evidence you already have and work with you to complete the outstanding requirements.

  • Practical assessment — your existing workplace activities can form the basis of your assessment.
  • Experienced support — you have access to assessor guidance throughout the qualification rather than being left to work everything out yourself.
  • Flexible approach — assessment can be planned around your work and the activities you actually carry out.
  • Clear requirements — we explain what evidence is needed and why it is required.
  • Career progression — the qualification can provide formal recognition of your supervisory competence and may support progression towards further construction supervision or management qualifications.
